About the Captain & Family

Jim Smith has been running a party boat for nearly 40 years. Before that Jim was a commercial fisherman, his first boat was named the "Margruss" In 1973 he purchased a party boat, which we named Mr. Bass. The boat was berthed at the Point San Pablo yacht harbor. All three of our sons were raised around the water. In their younger years the boys fished all the time, learned to cast and would gaff cans out of the water for practice. They caught all the bait for fishing and learned how to deckhand. There was always friendly competition among the boys and their father. All three boys went on to get their 100 ton masters license at 19 years of age. Steven the oldest son, moved to Alaska where he was in a successful party boat partnership, where they would take customers fishing in Cook Inlet. Christopher, the middle son, also went to Alaska but moved back to the Bay Area with his wife and two children. He now owns and operates his own boat, "The Capt. Hook" which is berthed for the winter in Crockett. In the summer his boat is berthed in Emeryville. James, the youngest son now works along side his father, skippering the Happy Hooker and his own boat the Bay Watch. The Happy Hooker is berthed in Martinez Marina during the winter and in Berkeley during the summer.
